The first building you build will play a big role in how your colony will be shaped. If you don't build your base in an expandable way, you will have to destroy and rebuild a lot which is obviously not efficient. The reason you want your base to be modular and easily expandable is to lower the cost of expansion. Unless you are playing purely for Role Play with some specifics in mind and if you plan to grow a big successful colony, your base should aim to be : Efficient / Cheap to build.
The usual advice is to take a few minutes right after you land to choose a good spot and plan your base but if you have no clue of what you are trying to achieve, it doesn't really help. The main reason is usually because of a poorly chosen starting location and horrible base layout that makes it very difficult, inefficient and ultimately not fun later on to grow.
